  • Why Mindfulness for Teens?

The Lifehouse Body & Soul Course teaches skills and concepts to help young people be mentally, emotionally, and physically healthy.

The following benefits are well-documented through multiple studies.

    • Improved sleep habits – Mindfulness can help students put their minds at rest and get a better night’s sleep.
    • Improved attention span – Practicing mindfulness on a regular basis can help students improve their attention span. This helps them to pay attention better in class which can lead to improved grades.
    • Reduced levels of anxiety – Learning to turn from negative thoughts and stress help students to lower their anxiety levels.
    • Lowers the chance of substance abuse – The Addiction Center reports that some teens with anxiety disorder turn to substances like alcohol and drugs in an effort to numb the stress that they are feeling. When they know healthy ways to handle anxiety, stress, and depression it reduces the chance that they will try to self-medicate with drugs or alcohol.
    • Helps to regulate emotions – In society, it’s commonly known that teenagers can be more emotional. They are dealing with a new influx of hormones and it can make them feel like they are out of control. Mindfulness can help young people respond skillfully to emotions, rather than flying into irrational reactions.
    • Increases empathy and compassion — It’s a dog-eat-dog world out there in our junior highs and high schools. One thing is for certain–these kids are hard on themselves–and on each other. With the influx of social media, pressure has never been higher for kids to meet impossible standards in achievement and appearance. One of the best antidotes for this high-stakes cultural dynamic are regular doses of self-compassion–a major element of our practice and curriculum.
  • Why Community?

Social support is one of the most important factors in creating and sustaining positive behavior change.

Positive social connections have been shown to:

    • enhance resilience to stress
    • decrease the negative impact of traumatic experiences
    • moderate genetic and environmental vulnerabilities for mental illness
    • alleviate symptoms and onset of depression

Community is an essential aspect of the work we do here at Lifehouse Body and Soul. Together, we learn and practice effective coping strategies to move through all kinds of mental, emotional, and physical challenges.

We focus on listening to and honoring our own bodies and hearts, and how to stop compulsively comparing ourselves to others.

We reach out to one another in moments of stress or tailspin to find connection and support, and fight the urge to isolate.

We make goals to practice these skills and hold ourselves accountable to the group each week.

The impact and value of community to our ability to transform and heal cannot be overstated.

If your child is struggling with anxiety, body image issues, low self-esteem, self-destructive behaviors, or troubled relationships, we have the tools and community to help her find peace and power.

Our program might be for your daughter if:

  • She has difficulty managing her emotions.
  • She is struggling to feel connected in her closest relationships.
  • She has tried therapy but hasn’t been able to achieve the changes she is looking for. (The magic key? Getting the body involved!)
  • She cannot get into a therapist and needs support while she sits on the waitlist.
  • She could use more positive connections, and a safe place to belong.
  • She needs help finding her voice.
  • She is a go-getter and a deep thinker and simply wants more out of life!
